Who we are

Step into a piece of history at Coats Grocery & Market, a family-owned gem that’s been a staple in Gause, Texas for almost a century. As we celebrate our rich history, we’re excited to welcome a new generation ready to carry on our story.

A Rich History

Our journey started in the early 1900s when J.A. and Mildred Ely opened the store, building it up until 1964. After J.A. tragically passed away from a heart attack, his daughter Wanda and her husband Alfred moved to Gause to keep the family dream alive. For 65 years, Al and Wanda not only ran the store—they became the heart of the community. Along the way, they raised three children, a growing group of grandkids, great-grandkids, and even great-great-grandkids, all while turning Coats Grocery into a hub for local news, friendship, and county fun.

A Place for the Community

Coats Grocery has always been more than just a place to pick up groceries—it's where stories are told, friendships are forged, and memories are made.

For decades, local old-timers have gathered here, sipping coffee and swapping stories—whether it’s talk of crops, politics, or just good ol’ fashioned small-town banter. Meanwhile, the women catch up on the latest fundraisers, share cherished family recipes, and proudly pass around photos of loved ones.

Every grandchild’s first job has been behind our counter, learning the value of hard work and family pride. And every new baby—whether family or friend—has been welcomed with a sweet sucker from Granny and a bottle of bug juice, all while sitting on the front bench, watching trains and big trucks roll by.

Coats Grocery isn’t just a store—it’s a place where laughter echoes, friendships bloom, and the heartbeat of Gause continues to thrive.

A New Chapter

After the recent loss of our beloved  matriarch, we weren’t sure what the future would hold. But the family’s spirit remains strong. Fourth-generation Kane Coats (son of Kevin and Lori Coats) is now running daily operations, keeping that warm, welcoming vibe going strong. At the same time, fifth-generation Phillip Rasco (grandson of James and Sherri Rasco) is overseeing the financial side, ensuring the store’s legacy continues. With ongoing support from Sherri Rasco (daughter of Al and Wanda) and her husband James, Kevin Coats, and many other dedicated family members, Coats Grocery remains a true symbol of community.

Come celebrate 100 years of history, love, and community at Coats Grocery & Market—where our legacy lives on with every visit.
